With gas prices ever-rising, more and more people are starting to look into cheap hybrid cars. Yet it's unlikely there will be any ads in the classified section of the local newspaper that say Cheap Hybrid Cars. Whether it's a hybrid or not, a new car costs a lot of money, so why not buy one that is designed to burn less gas and a smaller hole in the wallet in the long run?
A hybrid vehicle runs on two main parts, the conventional engine and the electric motor.
Hybrid vehicles are more efficient because they don't continue to constantly burn fuel. A car with a regular motor will burn fuel just by idling when stopped, but a the electric motor on a hybrid will take over to decrease the amount of fuel being wasted at such times. A hybrid vehicle on the market today shows improvements in fuel economy between 20 and 30 percent. There are already a number of cheap hybrid cars on the market sporting the name brands of three of the top car manufacturers in the world.
Cheap hybrid cars are available from Ford, Honda, and Toyota. Ford's hybrid, the Ford Escape hybrid, is the world's first SUV that runs on a full hybrid engine. Ford boasts that the Escape is the most fuel-efficient SUV on the planet, with 500 miles to a full tank of gas. The Front Wheel Drive Ford Escape Hybrids are cheap hybrid cars that get 34 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, with a retail price tag of $25,075.
Toyota currently has three hybrid vehicles on the market. Toyota hybrids include the Camry, Highlander and Prius. The Camry and Highlander are both great vehicles, but are both a little bit too pricey to be considered cheap hybrid cars. The Prius has it all; fuel efficiency, reliability, style and a cheap price tag. The Toyota Prius, which was ranked Best Overall Value of the Year by Intellichoice, has 55 mpg which is a combination of both city and highway miles by EPA estimations. If there was a section of the newspaper classifieds titled Cheap Hybrid Cars, the Prius would be at the top of the list. The cost for the Prius is $22,175.
Toyota also offers an upgrade from the Prius called the Touring. Similar to the Prius, Tourings are cheap hybrid cars with just a few added options like tuned suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Touring costs $23,070.
Honda, not one to be outdone by other manufacturers of cheap hybrid cars, has unveiled its own hybrid to the market. The Honda Civic hybrid has been dubbed revolutionary with its Advanced Technology Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle rating. The Civic hybrid gets around 51 mpg and comes equipped with a IMA battery pack, which costs a helluva lot less to recharge than it does to fill up at the gas pumps. The cost of the Honda Civic hybrid is $22,600.
There have also been talks in Japan to introduce the Honda Fit hybrid to the American market sometime in the near future. Early last year, the gasoline-only Fit was Japan's number one selling Honda vehicle. The estimated price of the Fit hybrid is set to be at $11,800 when it hits the Japanese market. A price like that would put other cheap hybrid cars to shame with no problem. With 56 mpg in the gasoline-only model, it will be interesting to see just how many miles per gallon can be achieved in these cheap hybrid cars.
Cheap hybrid cars are definitely making their mark both here in the states and across the globe. Sure, a hybrid may cost a few extra thousand up front than a gasoline-only powered automobile, but cheap hybrid cars are designed to look at the big picture. In the long run, people can expect to not only save more money on gas, but also help the environment with cheap hybrid cars. More and more people are starting to look towards cheap hybrid cars when selecting their next automobile purchase and the numbers are expected to stay on the rise. Who knows, cheap hybrid cars might even help to get Greenpeace off our backs for a while.
